I almost canceled my iPhone Duo preorder. Here’s my honest first 24 hours with Apple’s first foldable iPhone: the tiny outer screen, the inner display, the crease, apps, camera, and whether it’s for me.

Apple = Nano coding display / The rest of the world = Mate screen protector 😅 good balanced review.
Thanks for sharing Craig.
I actually like the idea. I like the idea of having the tablet available when you want to use it. Using an iPad, that looks good. The outside screen is fine. Use it for what what it's intended. It's a convienence. The cost is the grossest part of the package. . . I do use the camera in my current phone and utilize the telephoto function and close up. (Probably use the phone for the camera more than anything!) I like the actual size of it.
You went with the Black Ultra 4, good for you, me as well. Sorry not on the topic of this video, just saw it as you were talking about the Duo.
Excellent real world review. Great regular dude analysis. You nailed it
I mean, I hear you when you say outside is so small, and inside is perfect, but what are you buying the fold for in the first place??? Not just movies…open it up and use the inner screen
Hi, Craig. I appreciate your candid first look and agree with your points about unoptimized apps. I'm a developer and just released my app optimized for the Duo. Have to say, one of the reasons why there are not a lot of custom apps that take advantage of the Duo's unique features is that almost no developer except the really big ones had to rely on the Xcode simulator to do all development in time for the launch. The simulator is great and works for the most part but honestly a simulator is not the actual device.
I took a lot of time thinking about how to adapt my normal iPhone app for the Duo so that it's not just a port to the Duo. That meant looking at what could actually improve the user's experience on the Duo. For me that was productivity. Using the second screen to edit a doc when you're talking to your AI (that's what our app is, a local ai that you own and runs entirely on your device). In any case I think the use case is ideal for Duo users and would love to hear your feedback.
If you keep your Duo you can find my app on the App Store. Just search for "Sal Private AI". It's free. Would love to hear your thoughts on my take on how to make a bespoke Duo app less gimmicky and more useful..
I guess the economy is booming
Great video. I have 10 more days to decide if it’s right for me. I find the outer screen much more useful than I ever expected. Taking a quick photo, scanning a QR code, super quick notifications, etc. I find that I am not using my phone as much as I was which is a psychological trip. Quick music selection. I think I’m using the outer screen probably twice as much as the inner screen. You’re exactly right. The inside screen is not mandatory. Use it when you want to use it.
I had the surface duo. I had been waiting on it since it was leaked as the Courier back in 2009 or so. it was so awkward at first but my God having dual screen on a phone was brilliant. being able to have something open on one screen while texting about it on the other was massively useful. even silly things like watching a training video while playing solitaire. the only issue was that the device was so delicate the first time I dropped it was the end of it. I would love to see a dual screen device built rugged. The Iphone duo seems pretty promising but looks like it might take a couple iterations to get it right.
I love the smaller ‘preview’ screen and then if I need more I can open to the big screen. Love this review. Best I’ve seen so far. I have mine and I’m loving it.
Sounds like you're trying real hard to compromise with a mediocre product. Try the Fold 8, less compromises and much better user experience 😊
As an iPhone 13 mini fan I want this DUO bad. Love the smaller outer screen and size of the phone when folded. I bought the mini because I wanted a smaller phone so this DUO with the big inner screen is everything I’ve ever wanted in a phone…..my DUO will arrive shortly and I’m very excited.
Have they solved the issue with Duo screens cracking just after hours of normal use? I was going to preorder one of these and still would like to get one, but the cracking issue has me concerned.
Yeah I don’t like it. I don’t understand why they made it fold wide. If I wanted a foldable phone I would go with a Samsung
I can see where the Duo would be useful for those who travel on business. The larger size would mean not needing multiple devices. But I'd probably still take my MacBook Air when out of the office. It's a neat device but I'm one of those users not interested in a foldable iPhone.
My life style is iPhone with an iPad mini. I use my iPhone all day long at work, and when I'm running around during the weekend. At home I use my iPad. So I've obviously been excited about having both, that fit in my pocket. My main point is however, is that I think that the small screen will be fine for me as an iPhone during the day, and the opened screen will be a worthwhile home leasure iPad mini replacement. It really is a personal device in an age of tech people that are used to personal devices. So depending on use, people will pre determined idea of what will work for them.
I wonder will Apple bring out a large screen foldable next year ?
The price for me decides I don’t need it ..
I will skip
At $2000 you better like it 🫵
I’m on the fence about getting one. I really love my 17Pro Max. It would be nice to try something outside the norm. Great video thank you!
Folded for convenience, open for consumption
Funny review going from almost hate to liking it. I almost pulled the trigger on pre-order morning but stopped at last moment at 5:05 am. I love the idea of small phone and option to larger screen. But I waited because I’m not sure I want to have two phones…even with T-Mobile handoff. Made it to T-Mobile store today to see the Duo in person and can see me going with it in future, IF, they make some changes.. First, get rid of that side bar …it’s plain dumb…why do I care so much about easy access to phone, message, safari when they can be on the main set of icons…either put it back on bottom or have option to swipe it away. Have option to have the matte display or normal gloss display, like on iPad Pro option. Not a fan of the matte with video content..for reading great. Seen a few videos where people have removed that outer layer and it looks much better to me. Needs to Get pro cameras on it for price…and I do use telephoto for nature shots and other shots. And of course Face ID would be great to have on it. I hope they make these changes in the future, because I would love the option of small and larger form factors.
We'll be on the fence for 3 months if we're excited, so there's plenty of time to cool off 🙂
I always put my phone in my back pocket and i honestly would just have it open the whole time
I want a second phone for music and my embroidery art… so I def am intrigued with this
Upgrading from a 15 Pro Max and all of these issues seem like things that might bother me initially but a bigger device (when it’s open) appeals to me the most
After watching that tear down. No way I would buy it. Especially if you go to beach. And the hinge is causing the screen damage.
The IPhone Duo functions Brilliantly as a Foldable iPad for Videos, Reading and Entertainment, leaving the Camera work and high-efficiency tasks to a primary Pro Max device. I've been using 2 iPhones for years!
This is the most realistic review I’ve seen. Thank you for this. This is exactly what I was looking for!
It's not Apple iPhone Duo, it's called Sample iSung Surface DUO (80% parts from Samsung and copied old MS Surface DUO tablet design)
Sell it!!!!
I'm curious. Have anyone thinking about or have got this tried a foldable before now? Because it seems some people don't have a clue about what to expect from a foldable. All the talk about the crease and apps not being optimized. The phone folds in half. It's gonna have a crease! Some apps are not gonna be optimized. It's just how it works. Apple doesn't have some magic screen that will not crease. And they don't have the ability to make sure everynappnis optimized at launch. What were people expecting this device to be?
Great video but i know this isn't for me. The face id is a deal breaker even though i have an apple watch. The crease would bother me after paying a premium price and having to compromise. The compromises are to many versus the pro's.
It’s too awkward for an iphone and too small for an ipad. Not for me.
Not for me. I won’t talk trash about it. I just don’t desire a foldable from any brand. Too many drawbacks for a crossover form factor.
I would still rather see a foldable iPad Pro (with Face ID).
There were rumours of a foldable iPad earlier this year but nothing on the horizon yet
I actually want the smaller phone form factor so the outer screen is the actual draw for me. My thumbs are over trying to reach across the longer phones when single hand using it. The bonus to me is i get the smaller form factor and i don't have to carry my iPad mini with me to read or watch movies. I can just open it up when its time for that. I appreciate the honest review. I think some people are being nit picky about things or are being wildly impatient. Seems like the best of both worlds to me and if i have to wait a couple weeks to get it so be it. If i hate it ill trade it in. People dogging these companies for new things are killing me.
Samsung is the standard & had 8 years to perfect our Z Fold 8. Apple still playing catch up🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
The brand new iFLOP Doodoo
그냥 삼성 폴드8을 한번 써보라고 하고 싶네.
폴드8에서 할 수 있는 것들이 듀오에선 얼마나 안되는 지.
I had mine less than 24 hours. I took it back to Apple the next day. Just not for me. I prefer my Pro Max.
11:59 bingo!!! Exactly why Apple went with this cover screen ratio. Then you can rotate it and have different ways of watching content.
The key will be if when you go back to the iphone pro- you feel constricted consuming content
