Everyone loves a solid, vibrant Neocaridina Shrimp, but some of the most interesting shrimp in the hobby are the ones most people call low grade. Off-colour shrimp, culls, and wild types each have their own colouring and patterns, so you can tell individuals apart, and that makes them just as fascinating to watch as the high grades.

Would you keep wild-type and off-coloured shrimp with your high-grade ones, or separate them?
Those wild types may survive better in a community tank with fish because they do not pop out so much. Another advantage.
yeah!! i started a tank with 10 red and 1 each of goldenback yellow, orange, blue, and black. a few generations later, there is still a set of really red shrimp, a group that's gone transparent with varying types black markings, the greens, even some black with a bright yellow stripe down their back. theyre cool as hell and i love when you get a weird looking one that becomes a treat whenever u spot them again
I like the big brown striped monstrosities that show up sometimes. They tend to be very large females nearly the size of amanos.
Better choice for wild type shrimp wld be a malaya shrimp (Caridina cf. babaulti MALAYA) in my opinion.
I have some beautiful brown ones with a light brown stripe down their back. Against wood, they look amazing and my betta doesnt notice them
One of my tank is full of blue velvet and wild types. I love them, it's so exciting to see how the colors evolve with time. I just got few red shrimplets last week, I was really surprised. I wonder which genetic will win in the end and if the blue will stay in that tank
Im sooo excited for my shrimp to breed so i can sort out the culls. I have a betta tank full of val, tonnes of floater roots, and lots of tannins. It also has wild type ramshorns. Some low grade and wild cull neos would look so good in it!!!
I have a striking blue/wild colored variant that's semi transparent.
Agreed!
I bought a couple of groups of culls from ebay a few years ago, and it's been a really interesting long-term thing to watch how their coloration evolves. I have some that are transparent, some which are mottled brown, occasionally one that is nearly entirely black. Some look like land insects, with their dark brown coloration with a stripe down the back.
Lately the red coloration has started coming back.
Yes, I'm the one who prefers 'natural' everything, dogs ,cats, fish, shrimps …
I'm with you on this.
Hi SC, this morning my stiphodon goby was panting a ton, and I just found it dead. What could have the issue been? Also, I’m thinking of replacing it with a hillstream loach.
