Africanized honey bees can’t easily be told from European honey bees: they’re only slightly smaller, and labs use wing and body measurements or genetic tests (University of Florida, IFAS IN790). Their venom isn’t stronger; European colonies usually send no more than 10-20 bees after an intruder, Africanized colonies may send hundreds, defend a larger area and need less provocation. In October 2010 in Dougherty County, Georgia, an elderly man who disturbed a feral colony while working with heavy equipment was stung more than 100 times and died; samples tested in Florida came back Africanized, the state’s first record (WALB, WTVM, UGA).
